Tips on personal care

Prepare emergency numbers for your kids
Put a list of important numbers by the phone as well as a copy of your home’s address. Kids can get flustered when dialing 911. Specify who the kids are to call in an emergency. Give alternatives. Children in rural areas should know they can use their bikes to get help if the phones go dead.

Use dishwashing liquid for hand washables
Read the label on the soap you use for dishwashing by hand. Generally, it can also be used to wash your delicate garments. If the product is formulated to be easy on your hands, it is gentle enough for even your fine hand washables.

Turn an old dress into a jumper
A denim, wool, or corduroy dress can be transformed into a jazzy jumper. First, cut away the collar or reshape the neckline into a V or scoop, then remove the sleeves and enlarge the armholes slightly to accommodate a blouse underneath. Cut facings from the sleeve fabric or face the new neck and armholes with bias binding.

Turn a tight sweater into a cardigan
Is a favorite pullover sweater too small? Transform it into a classy cardigan. Measure the exact center of the front, mark it, and machine-stitch down each side of the centerline. Cut from top to bottom between the lines of stitching and finish the edges with ribbon or decorative sewing tape.

Covered frayed cuffs
If your shirt or blouse cuffs are fraying, cover them with bias or satin binding (depending on the style of the shirt/blouse). If you use a contrasting color for the binding and bind the edges of the collar as well, it will look like a completely different shirt/blouse.

Reverse a worn collar when frayed
If a shirt collar is starting to fray, don’t get rid of the garment. Carefully remove the collar at the seam where it joins the shirt, turn the collar over, and reattach it with the unworn side showing. You can also sew the seam closed and leave the shirt collarless.

Prevent stains on garments
Before getting dressed, use a cotton ball soaked in witch hazel to wipe away body oils around your neck and wrists so collars and cuffs stay clean. Add cotton underarm shields to protect your favorite dresses and blouses from perspiration stains. Either tack the shields on or sew on snaps to secure them.

Reinforce knees and elbows in your clothing
Put iron-on patches on the insides of the knees of pants, especially jeans. You can also use this trick on shirt or jacket elbows that will get a lot of rough wear. Hidden iron-on patches are particularly useful for kids’ clothing.

Extend the life of your clothes
Give your clothes a rest. Let them air out or dry before you put them away. Don’t wear the same items day after day; allow at least 24 hours for moisture to evaporate.

Shop for specific clothing items at certain times of the year….
And save money. Sales are often offered around holidays or at inventory time when manager’s need to clear out last season’s stock.

For the very closest leg shave
Shave in the morning, when legs are least swollen. Soak legs in the tub for a few minutes before shaving. Rub on a lathering agent to allow the razor to glide nicely. Shave from bottom to top, AGAINST the grain, using light pressure. If legs are sensitive, switch to an electric razor and shave WITH the grain.

When slathering on sunscreen for protection
Don’t overlook the backs of your hands. Winter or summer, they’re almost constantly exposed, and because the skin is so thin, they’re easily damaged by the sun, a dead give-away to your age. Use a lotion with an SPF of at lest 15. Reapply whenever you wash your hands.

The right hairbrush is one of the keys to high-impact shine
For curly textures, a round, natural-bristle brush is best. For thick, straight hair, use a flat one. Vent brushes may add volume but won’t add shine.

Remove ballpoint ink from clothing
Rub with ordinary hair shampoo and then launder as usual.

Prevent chains from tangling and knotting in your jewelry box
Cut a drinking straw to half the length of the chain, slip the chain through it, then fasten the catch.

To give moderately priced lipstick the lush, creamy look of a more expensive one

Do some trail runs first with a digital camera. Wear different clothes and makeup colors and see which you like best.

Good treatment for hands
Keep a cut lemon in a covered dish at the sink. Rub it over your hands after washing dishes. Dig fingers into it, then dry hands. Repeat two or three times and finish with an application of hand lotion.

Smudge your polish while giving yourself a manicure?
Put a drop of polish remover on the pad of your thumb and rub it lightly over the smudge until the spot is smooth. Reapply polish.

No more lost socks!
Make each kid a drawstring sock bag to keep in his or her room. All dirty socks go in, and the bag is thrown into the wash. After drying, the bag (still full) is returned to its owner to put the socks in a drawer.

When kids pants are new….
Apply iron-on patches to the inside at the knees. The pants won’t wear out as quickly.

Keep yourself on track while dieting
During the winter, put on your bathing suit once a month and then stand in front of the mirror.

No more tangled cord when ironing
Pin a large blanket pin to the wide end of your ironing board and run the cord through it.

When drying down coats or vests….
Throw a clean sneaker in the dryer with them. It redistributes the down and fluffs it.

When shopping at outlets….
Try on more than one size. Often items are in these stores because they were incorrectly labeled in the first place.

Nail polish remover removes scuff marks
Wet a paper towel with fingernail polish remover and rub scuff marks off shoes.

Color code your kids
No more mixed up laundry. Assign each child a color. Then, buy colored fingernail polish that corresponds with the colors chosen. Mark the tags on each of the children’s clothing with their particular color. This allows quick identification of which articles of clothing belong to whom.

Become more organized with plastic containers
Cut down plastic containers (milk, dishwashing soap, shampoo, etc.) and use them to hold office items, hair items, small kids toys (marbles, etc.), your scouring pads and sponges, etc.

Retrieve ‘lost’ buttons
Take an empty jar and cut a fairly wide slit in the lid. Whenever you find a stray button, whether in the washing machine, on the floor, etc., pop it into your button jar. Everyone can contribute to the button jar when they spot a wandering button. When mending, you’ll likely find your ‘lost’ button in the button jar.

Practical use for leftover pieces of bar soap
Put small pieces of leftover soap in a squeeze bottle and add some warm water. Leave the bottle by the sink where the children wash their hands. When the suds get thin, just add more soap pieces. If it gets too thick, simply add warm tap water. It lasts for ages and there is never any waste.

Rotating towels, wash cloths, linens, etc. lengthens their lives
After each laundering, when putting the items back on the shelf, place them on the bottom of the pile already stacked. This way they will wear evenly and it will be longer before you have to replace them.

No more stuck fingernail polish lids
Grease the ‘threads’ on glue and nail polish bottles and they won’t stick.

Reinforce pants’ pockets
BEFORE a hole is worn in a pocket, add a piece of iron-on tape all the way around the bottom of the pocket. This reinforces the pocket and should last the life of the pants. It’s really great for a little boys’ pockets as he collects rocks and other sundry treasures throughout his day’s adventures.

Save money on razor blades
Get a jar big enough in which you can drop your razor. Fill it with just enough mineral oil for the head of the razor to be covered. Keep the razor there after rinsing and using it. Cover with a lid. You will be able to get more shaves per blade, even on tough beards.

Recipe card holders can be used for MORE than just recipes!

Some foods seem to be harmful to your hair
Foods that you should avoid are: an excessive amount of sweets, chocolate, cakes and cookies. Replace them with fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoiding these will ensure that the hair that is forming beneath the surface of your scalp is healthy.

Boost your hair’s shine
Once your hair is completely dry, finish it off with a cool blast of air to seal the cuticle. If the cuticles are ragged, there is no shine.

Before you color your hair...
Be sure you really condition the ends so that they don't absorb too much color during the process. The ends of your hair are usually the most porous and have a tendency to really soak up color.

How often should you color your hair?
It depends on the growth rate of your hair. Every two to four months you should go in for a highlight application, and about every six weeks for a single process color application. During the summer hair grows faster, but it also naturally lightens up, so you don't have to get your highlights done as often as during the winter.

For care of straight hair….
Use a deep-cleaning shampoo daily and apply a clarifying gel treatment to roots once a week to prevent oil buildup. After blow drying your hair, use a flatiron to enhance the sheen.

For care of wavy hair….
Work up a lather with a shine-enhancing shampoo and conditioner. Rinse well.Smooth and separate wet strands with a wide-tooth comb, then spritz a silicone-based shine-enhancing spray from ends to roots. Dry using a blow dryer with a tapered nozzle to direct air down the hair shaft to seal the cuticle.

For care of curly hair….
Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner if your hair is prone to dryness. After washing, gently blot hair dry with an absorbent towel and apply 4 to 6 drops of silicone-based shine serum (the thicker your hair, the more you can use). Detangle your hair with your fingers and allow it to air dry.

Make your own hair spray
Chop up one lemon (or orange for dry hair). Boil in two cups water until half of the initial amount remains. Cool, strain, place in a spray bottle and store in the refrigerator. If too sticky, add more water. Add one ounce rubbing alcohol as a preservative. The spray can be stored for up to two weeks unrefrigerated.

Help in reversing hair loss
Blend bananas with honey, yogurt and low-fat milk. A drink rich in biotin can help keep your hair firmly rooted. Take dietary supplements such as Vitamin B6, zinc & saw palmetto. Invert your head while you shampoo and massage your scalp. This helps promote blood circulation to the head. Eliminate stress and get enough sleep.

For a better home hair coloring process…
Deep condition your hair before you color it and then wait two days after shampooing before coloring. The color will adhere better because your scalp is more sensitive after shampooing. It will make the process more comfortable and the natural oils in your hair will protect it.

Prevent hair from dripping on your skin when coloring it
Apply a thin layer of moisturizer or petroleum jelly to the skin at your hairline. Most hair dyes will not drip, but in case they do, this makes cleanup much easier.

When coloring your hair
Part your hair into sections and apply the color from the roots to the ends, starting near the temples. Double-check the instructions to be sure you are following them correctly.

Leave your hair down as you color it
You will achieve a more even look. Pinning your hair on top of your head leaves more to chance.

When you color your hair…
Try to stick pretty close to your natural hair color if it is your first experience with coloring. This way it won’t be the end of the world when your roots start growing in.

Hairstyles and a heart-shaped face
If your face is shaped like a pretty valentine, the pointed chin draws attention away from the eyes. You could bring focus to your eyes by wearing side-swept bangs, a fringe on your brow or long layers at the top. You can also let your hair grow and have it done with layers that touch your cheekbones.

Hairstyles and a square face
If you have a square face, you have an angular jaw. Draw attention away from the jaw by putting texture to your hair. Short curls as well as long layers that start just below the jaw line accomplish this. Avoid cutting your hair in one-length bobs or wearing bangs that are cut bluntly.

Hairstyles and a round face
If your face is round, you need to create an illusion of length by cutting your hair just below your chin, or in graduated layers. Avoid short, one-length, blunt cuts since it will only draw attention to the roundness of your face.

Hairstyles and a long face
If your face is long or oblong, create an illusion of width to balance it out by doing your hair with long, side-swept bangs or chin-length bobs. You can also frame your face with curls and waves. Avoid extreme hairstyles (real long or extremely short). It will take the width from your face and emphasize its length.

Hairstyles and an oval face
If your face is oval it is a perfect face because almost any hairstyle, whether long, short, straight or curly, will go with it. You will do well with having layers near your chin or cheekbones to draw attention to them. Avoid hairstyles that add volumes to the top of your head. It will make your face look longer.

Achieve big beautiful eyes by applying eye shadow
Most eye shadows are packaged with 2 neutral colors (the base color) and the darker color (the accent color) and a lighter color (the highlight color). Dry skin can cause flaky and rough skin
To get rid of the layer of dead skin, use a gentle exfoliant containing alpha hydroxy acid or beta hydroxy acid. Apply moisturizer frequently and always wear sunscreen.

Use moisturizers that contain emollients
Emollients, such as urea and mineral oils, soften skin and provide a barrier to keep moisture in and harmful agents out. Your moisturizer should also have lipids (fat or waxes) such as cholesterol, lecithin or glycerol.

You should consider using an anti-wrinkle cream…..
Before you even see a wrinkle appear. Eye creams in particular are effective at supporting the delicate area around the eyes and preventing or stalling the development of wrinkles. For many that means starting in the thirties. The skin's natural levels of collagen diminish with age and anti-wrinkle creams may offer a replacement.
