Want some new books but are short of funds?
How about a ‘book and magazine swap’? Set a date, time, and place and then tell your friends. Put on some coffee, throw in some cookies OR make it a luncheon snack with everyone contributing. CD’s, DVD’s and old VCR’s can be thrown into the mix. It’s fun for everyone and everybody leaves with ‘new’ books.

Repel flies from swimming pools and doorways
Pots of sweet basil around the patio and doorways will keep the flies from taking over!
Make your own block ice for parties and picnics
Need to ensure your food stays cool in the heat? Fill a plastic bucket with water and place it in your deep freeze overnight. This ice lasts a long time. Do NOT use a metal bucket as it might split.

No more pesty ants at your picnic
Cut the tops off large soda bottles, bleach bottles or other similar bottles. Fill the bottoms with water and place them under the legs of your picnic table. Since ants can’t cross water, your food is safe from these unwanted visitors.

Need a pretty centerpiece?
Core several large apples and insert candles of different heights. Put some greenery around it and you’ve got a delightful centerpiece.
Disguise a gift to look like a giant “chocolate kiss”
On a round piece of cardboard or large paper plate, set your gift. Place aluminum foil beneath the plate and wrap it up and around the gift to form a “kiss” shape. You can create a gift tag out of a long piece of white paper and stick it in the top.

Improvised cake plate
Make a disposable cake plate by covering a sturdy piece of cardboard with aluminum foil.

As a boss, should you give your staff a gift?
There’s no obligation but it is an excellent way to acknowledge your appreciation for those who work for you. Give equally across the board to department heads, not showing favor to any one in particular. Gift certificates, CDs and food items make great gifts.
Should you give your boss a holiday gift?
Generally, no. It could be viewed as an attempt to win favor. However, an inexpensive and non-personal gift from you and your co-workers is fine. If you’ve worked closely with the same boss for years, it’s ok to give a small gift. Food gifts (especially baked homemade goodies) are great to take and share with your colleagues.

Appropriate gift giving, to give or not to give?
If a gift is unexpected and you do not want to reciprocate, there is no obligation to do so. Thank the gift giver warmly and leave it at that. An open house is an informal celebration and doesn’t require a gift although you can certainly do so. Take a simple gift to the host of a holiday party.

Creative giftwrapping
Save deflated Mylar balloons and use as giftwrap.
Eliminate smoking odors
Place several bowls of vinegar in inconspicuous spots when having a party. The vinegar will absorb the smoke odor.
Need a quick candlestick?
Just core an apple, orange or grapefruit, then put a candle in the middle. This also makes a pretty last-minute centerpiece as well.
No more wasted wrapping paper
Are you constantly cutting too much or too little wrapping paper off the roll? Loop string around the gift, then stretch the string out on the wrapping paper to calculate exactly how much paper you need.
Stop candle wax from dripping on birthday cakes
Use miniature marshmallows as candleholders on birthday cakes. That way, wax won’t drip on the icing.
Recycled gift wrap
Save deflated Mylar balloons and use as gift wrap.
Cheap foil gift wrap
Make cheap foil gift wrap. Wash and turn inside out foil potato chip bags and use as gift bags for presents. Tie the top shut with a ribbon.
Children's birthday party
To add delight to a child’s birthday party, make skewers alternating candy, marshmallows, and any other items that can easily be put on a skewer. CAUTION: these must be eaten while sitting down to avoid any accidents that could cause injury.

Keeping fit on the job
Sitting on the edge of a chair, straighten your back and hands in support on the seat and cross and uncross your legs quickly!
