Sharp builder’s sand available at a local sand pit or a masonry supplier. It’s composed of coarse, angular particles that break up the soil, which then becomes less dense, and thus easier to work and more free-draining. You must dig in substantial quantities, at least a wheelbarrow load per square yard. Combine with additions of organic matter.
