L.A. is notorious for her traffic jams. Take advantage of available real-time traffic updates and information to help you choose the best route.

I recommend checking out http://trafficinfo.lacity.org, an online automated traffic surveillance system that gives you transit information such as the status of freeways, incident reports, and other info that slows or stops traffic. It tells you about special events, if there is road construction, filming going on or natural disaster that inhibits driving.
You can also access area maps that zoom in and show you a digitalized version of real-time traffic. The site will highlight the roads in either red - meaning cars are traveling between 0-10 mph, yellow - indicating speeds of 10-20 mph, or green - which shows vehicles are driving above 20 mph.
Sig Alert
A popular choice for LA drivers, www.sigalert.com shows traffic throughout Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, San Diego, San Franciso, Sacramento, Phoenix and Tucson. You will find useful freeway traffic information, the site lets you know how fast people are driving by any given off ramp.
With this handy online program you can subscribe to sign in and can quickly see the traffic conditions for your personal routes and alternatives and short cuts to help you bypass any back up. Sig Alert sends you email and text messages when it detects a change or a problem on one of your routes and provides a backup route. The subscription is $19.95 a year, or $2.95 a month. For most commuters the price is well worth avoiding traffic jams.
Other Alternatives
For traffic updates while on the road tune into AM 1070 or AM 980. These radio stations keep you posted on Los Angeles traffic and road conditions every five to ten minutes.
The California Highway Patrol also posts road alerts and traffic incidents online at http://cad.chp.ca.gov. You can always know when there is road work and sudden road closures.
