One year: seeds germinate, the plant grows, flowers are produced, which in their turn produce seed. However, many plants that are not strictly annuals are treated as such. For instance, the Marvel of Peru (Mirabilis jalapa) is a perennial grown as a half-hardy annual, and Busy Lizzie (Impatiens walleriana) is a greenhouse perennial cultivated as a half-hardy annual.
