To encourage gophers to take up residence somewhere else….

Get an empty glass bottle, such as a rootbeer bottle. Bury the bottle in the soil. Buy one of those "Whirlygigs" and put the end of the Whirlygig in the bottle. When it spins, it rattles around in the glass bottle and drives the gophers away.
