Automobile Registration in Los Angeles

As a recent new resident to California I found out that there is more to registering a vehicle in California than in other states.

Welcome to California

• In order to drive in California all vehicles must have a California registration, California car insurance, and pass the smog test.  
• New residents have only 20 days after their arrival to acquire California vehicle registration.  Some people wait longer, however if a patrol officer discovers you he has the power to revoke your license.
• Newcomers must present their current car registration, a smog test certificate and their vehicle purchase information at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in order to receive California registration.

Smog Test

• Passing emissions inspection, otherwise known as a smog test, is required by California State law before any vehicle can be on the road.
• The test price varies so check surrounding auto repair garages for the best deal. A sign with a red check mark outside indicates that a shop provides the test. The smog certificate itself is an additional $8.25.  

Fees

• Overall registration cost varies depending on the type of vehicle; there is no flat fee as in some other states. Initial registration fee is $31, with an added California Highway Patrol (CHP) fee of $10, and an additional $1 fee for a reflector license plate.
• Then there is the vehicle license fee (VLF) which is based on the purchase price of your automobile or the value of your car when you bought it. The VLF reduces every year you renew your registration for up to 11 years. The good news is that your VLF is tax deductable.

Don’t Wait in Line

• Infamous for long lines and unfriendly customer service, avoid DMV chaos by calling ahead and making an appointment.  You can also make an appointment using their website, www.dmv.ca.gov.
• AAA members can renew their California registration at any AAA office and avoid the DMV altogether.
