Motivating students in the classroom is a challenge for all teachers. Facing a variety of students with different interests, learning styles and life experiences makes classroom management a skill on its own. Follow these tips on motivating students to learn.
Explain Why
Show the students what they are learning is important to real life. Make sure they understand why it is important to know what is being taught. By seeing the practicality of learning what is being the taught the students will be more motivated to learn and process the knowledge given.
Relate to real life
The students should be led to draw on their own life experiences to learn and understand class material. Use examples in lessons that are touchable, relatable and real to the students. Relating class material to real life engages and motivates the students.
Encourage group learning
Plan activities where students hold group discussions and have the opportunity to communicate with the teacher one on one. Do not put students on the spot by forcing them to speak in front of the whole class. Encouraging group learning activities motivates learning and engagement in the classroom.
Reward the students
Provide the students reasons to succeed and learn by encouraging them with positive reinforcement. Reward good behavior, proper note taking, good grades and contribution to class. Offer small prizes such as pencils, erases or special privileges in class. Reward the whole class for good behavior with field trips, passes on homework and special events.
