Tips on Teaching Lesson Plans

Creating a fun, effective and educational lesson plan for your class is vital.  The basics of making teaching lesson plans are as follows:

• Determine the lesson's specific objectives.  Have 1 to 3 learning goals for the students. Identify any links the lesson objective has to state or national curriculum requirements.

• Write out what the students already know, and what prior learning is required for this specific lesson. This will help you to know what will be challenging for some students.  Configure an introduction to the lesson's topic by reviewing information essential to the new lesson objective that has been previously been taught

• Determine a guiding question for the lesson, why it is important for the students to learn the lesson's objective goals.  Make sure to incorporate this guiding question in the introduction and throughout the lesson plan. Write out questions that you can use throughout the lesson to help students connect the lesson with real life applications.

• Configure the materials and resources that you will use during your lesson.  Select assessments to give to the students.  Develop activities for the students to work with the new concepts and apply their learned knowledge. Set up a fair way to evaluate their work to see how much the students have learned.

• Distinguish what individual learning needs are in your classroom and consider how you will modify the lesson plan to meet those needs. For example, if you have a student with visual impairment, make sure to provide large print printouts of the PowerPoint slides you use during the lecture.
