Dirt around roots on one side. Dig fairly close to base of plant to ensure you find roots belonging to plant you are working on. Take a close look at roots that you want to take cuttings from. Make sure they're healthy, living roots, not dead ones that look black or dried out. Choose roots that are pencil thick.
