Broad beans. Sometimes grown as a shell bean in place of limas in short-season areas. More frost-tolerant than other beans. May be planted with spring peas, 4-6 weeks before last frost of spring. Best grown in areas with long, cool springs. In areas where winter turns abruptly into summer, fava flowers will drop without setting pods.
