What is the better seed

Between hybrid and non-hybrid seeds, which one should you grow in your garden? Question no further what is the better seed. Non-hybrids are known for their sustainability, adaptability, higher quality, and heritage. There is no question that non-hybrid seeds are the ones to grow.

A look at the competitors:

  • Hybrid seeds: Genetically altered and severely inbred, hybrid seeds are fabricated to produce plants with commercially favorable characteristics: long storage life, uniform appearance, short growing period, and resistance to pests, diseases and toxic chemical sprays. Most supermarket produce is derived from hybrid seeds, including organic food!
  • Non-hybrid seeds: Non-hybrid seeds are open-pollinated (opposed to mechanically pollinated in a lab) to produce plants that look just like their parents. This is called being “true-to-type.”  Non-hybrids are free of genetic tempering and patents. Unfortunately, non-hybrid seeds are becoming rare.

Why non-hybrids are the better seed:

  • Self-sufficiency: Non-hybrid seeds guarantee food security and grant freedom from privatization and patent bio-piracy. The corporate sector is gaining control of the food supply. Non-hybrid seeds are the only plant resources free to save and replant without having to pay for rights.

Non-hybrid seeds also produce fertile plants, while hybrid seeds do not. If hybrid seeds do germinate, the resulting seedling is off-type, monstrous and unclassifiable. In contrast, by producing true-to-type seeds, non-hybrids promise next season’s food supply. This saves you money from having to annually purchase new seed and regularly purchasing vegetables at the supermarket.

  • Adaptability: Non-hybrid seeds preserve genetic diversity. Since non-hybrids are open-pollinated and bred naturally with a wide range of genetic diversity, they easily adapt to various growing conditions through the process of natural gene mutation. This is when non-hybrid seeds adapt to certain soils, climates, environmental changes and become resistant to local diseases and pests.
  • Higher quality: Non-hybrid seeds have greater flavor and nutritional value than hybrid seeds because they do not contain unnatural, cloned genetic material. Non-hybrid seeds are without chemicals and genetic modifications. They also have exceptional flavor and nutritional value because they are allowed to ripen on the vine.

Heritage: Growing non-hybrid seeds continues the ten-thousand year tradition of promoting genetic diversity, sustaining the environment and feeding your body with more nutritious, better tasting food. Non-hybrid seeds connect gardeners to their ancestors.

For example, gardeners can grow the same plants as their forefathers during WWII or the Civil War. Many also chose to grow the same plants as their forefathers from farther back in their history. Non-hybrid cultivars from ancient Africa, Asia, America, Europe and the Middle East are freely available.
