Use plastic milk/juice bottles to deliver water direct to the roots. Cut a hole in the bottom of the bottle, plant it upside-down beside the plant, sinking it to the level of the roots and in future, water via the hole in the bottom. Water goes exactly where it's needed, can't run off and won't evaporate easily.
