It is no secret that computers have become an integral part of our lives. A computer that starts running slow becomes a problem and can cause a great deal of frustration. Besides, quite often, if you don’t deal with it, it can damage your computer. If you noticed that your computer is not the same it used to be, here are a few tips:
- Perform regular maintenance. The more you use your computer, the more cluttered it becomes. As you install and delete new programs, the data becomes scattered all over your hard drive making the hard drive works longer to retrieve information. You should make it a habit to defragment you computer on a regular basis. Before you defragment, clean your hard drive. Both functions come free with your computer.
- Check start-up programs. Some programs automatically load when you start your computer. They continue running consuming your computer’s resources. Run msconfig.exe and go through the list of programs you think shouldn’t run all the time. Be careful though. If you are not sure about a program, leave it running.
- Run antivirus software. Often the reason for your computer running slow is a virus. If you don’t have antivirus software installed, there are many companies that offer free computer scans or even free antivirus downloads.
- Make sure you have enough memory. Check if there is enough RAM on your computer. These days programs consume a lot of memory. Windows Vista, for example, needs 512 MB. New Windows 7 need even more—1GB.
