General guidelines for cool-season grass, EARLY spring lawn care:

Examine lawn for signs of insects or diseases. Mow whenever the grass height increases by one-third. Aerate if necessary. Establish new lawns or patch bare spots of existing lawns. Fertilize or compost.  Treat lawns with a preemergence herbicide for weeds such as: crabgrass, dandelions, or purslane
