Spray foam insulation kits can save you a great deal of money by not having to hire professional help. Improper use of the equipment can cause you waste money on insulation and damage your house. Here are some tips on how to correctly use your spray foam insulation equipment.

  • Safety

Make sure to wear protective eyewear, a mask, and gloves while you are using the spray foam insulation equipment. It is very easy for over-spray to get into your face if you are performing the job in a tight space. Protect yourself the best you can.

  • Temperature

Check the temperature of the foam insulation tank and the surface in which you are going to apply the material. They should both be between 65 and 80 degrees. Compare the feel of these surfaces in relation to the temperature of the room. If the tank or the surface is too warm, wait for them to cool down. If they are too cold, warm the area with a small space heater. Be careful not to put the heater too close to the foam insulation tank.

  • Clean

Thoroughly clean the surface of all dirt, dust, and debris. The foam insulation will not property stick to the surface if it is not completely cleaned before installation.

  • Prep The Equipment

Use a crescent wrench to attach the proper spray hose to the insulation tank. Make sure it is fastened tightly. Open up the valves on the tank by turning them counter-clockwise.

  • Application

Spray a thin layer of foam to the surface. Make sure the layer is evenly sprayed throughout the whole surface you want to cover. Let the foam rise and dry, which should take roughly 20 to 30 minutes. After the foam has dried, check for any missed spots. This is important because missing a spot can cause a particular area in your house to not have good insulation. Apply a thin and even layer of insulation to any missed spots you find.

  • Clean-Up

Shut off the valves and carefully detach the hose from the tank. Clean the area from any overspray from your job. Store the tank and hose in a cool/dry area away from combustible products. You can save your left over foam insulation for a later job until its expiration date (should be marked).
