4-6” layer of straw or other light, weed-free, organic material in late fall to protect the crowns from the cold and to prevent plants from heaving. When temperatures begin to warm in the spring, and when pale new leaves begin to grow beneath the mulch, rake the mulch down between the plants to give them light.
