Planting time. They should be cut back by one-fourth and any low, bushy growth near the base of the plant pruned away. After 2-3 years of growth, regular pruning can start. On upright bushes, the goal is to open the center of the bush. On spreading bushes, the goal is to remove any low, shaded branches.
