Thin branches rather than shorten them at the tips. First, cut off dead or damaged stems at ground level. Stand back and move around the plant. Shape the plant to its natural form by taking out any stems that make the plant unbalanced. Use this method to prune forsythias, azaleas, viburnums and other flowering shrubs.
