Black Friday Shopping Tips

Here are a few tried and true tips for a successful Black Friday (or bargain shopping) trip.

  1. Check our your ads.  Make sure you check our your Thanksgiving Day newspaper or online ads before you go out so you know what to expect.  You will find tons of coupons and sales in these ads so you know where to go for what.  Also, you may find out that you will receive an extra incentive if you shop before a certain time.
  2. Be sure you do your research.  If you are purchasing a digital camera, be sure you know what camera you want before you go into the store.  You do not want to end up with a bad product just because it was a "good deal."  Be sure you know what you are buying.
  3. Compare prices.  Make sure you have checked everywhere to see the better deal.  Also see what the item comes with - a free printer with computer purchase, free gift card with purchase. Weigh your options before you go to the store.
  4. Look for Early Bird Discounts.  Many places will run an additional 10-50% off all purchases made between 5am - 11am. Be sure to take advantage of those additional discounts first.
  5. Beat the crowds.  Check online - many retailers will offer the same sales online - and you can pick up in store!  Some retailers are also opening on Thanksgiving Day in order to give shoppers an extra day to save.
  6. Bring your ads.  If something was supposed to come with a free gift card, and the cashier does not do it, make sure you have your proof.  Also, some stores offer a "lowest price guarantee," however, you do need to have the full competitors ad in order to receive that price.
  7. Know your stores return policies before you purchase.  You may not be able to return your purchased items if necessary.
  8. Always ask for gift receipts.  Your receipents will appreciate it, especially if they return items after Christmas and they can only get store credit for the purchase price on that day...which may be considerably less.
  9. Use your credit card (only if you can pay off the bill).  Using your CC will offer extra protection - there is a warranty coverage, return protection and a sale price protection.
  10. Save your receipts.  Most stores, within 7-14 business days, will offer a price adjustment, if the price goes even lower.
