Bud or shoot. If the terminal bud is removed, the remaining topmost bud takes over and becomes the leading terminal bud. Buds along sides of a stem are responsible for lateral growth that makes plants bush out. Dormant latent buds that lie underneath bark of some plants become active if more mature buds are removed.
