Use a spot light to illuminate a specific area of your property (stucco wall, decorative posts, pool). Area lighting will enhance the textures of the walls and give the house size. You can also use different colors when lighting the inside of your pool or hot tub. This will add some flash to your pool area (purple, green, Caribbean blue).
Up-lighting will give a very dramatic effect to any area of your property. Install a spotlight to the base of a tree, shrub, wall, or arbor and aim the light upwards. This will give the object or area more size by drawing the eyes to look up. It will also accentuate the lines and edges of your home when used at the base of the walls. Use colored up-lighting help decorate your home for a party or an event.
Down-lighting is a practical and a safe way to light your property. The most common type of down-lighting is under the eaves to illuminate the front porch of the house. Use decorative light fixtures to give personality to these commonly used lights. Attach motion sensors to the lights to ward off unwanted trespassers. Down-lighting can also be used to illuminate walkways and railings. This will make your property safer to navigate in the dark. White Christmas-lights and light ropes are easy to install for these purposes.
Moon-lighting is a style of lighting that imitates the effects of moonlight. Place a spot light on a tall tree in your yard. The light will create interesting shadows from the leaves and branches. Do the same with shrubs and tall plants to create a beautiful silhouette. You can also place filters in front of your lights to shine patterns/designs on your walls or on the ground (good for parties).
