Corn, beans, and squash grow well together

Tall cornstalks support trailing beans and shade squash while squash keeps the ground cool. Beans replenish the soil with plenty of food for the others. Squash vines repel corn pests. Plant your corn first to give it a head start. Once it is about twelve inches tall, plant beans around it. Intersperse squash seedlings between the beans at regular intervals.
