They get a slight electrical shock on contact. This is helpful for raised beds, trees, containers, flowerpots, and other areas. A copper strip or mesh must be 6-8 inches so slugs can't raise their bodies over it. If need be, double layer copper to make sure it is wide enough. Clean with vinegar regularly to keep it working effectively.
