  • Find A Script

Find a script you believe in and want to make into a movie. Directing is a labor of love. You must be absolutely sold on the script in order to artistically do it justice. Read your friend’s scripts or writers you would like to collaborate with. Write your own if you have had an idea you always wanted to make a reality. Your creative ideas will all start from loving the script.

  • Find A Producer

Find a producer to help bring all your resources together and organize the project. Get someone that will help you budget out the details, secure locations, and find the right crew to make the movie happen. Delegating some of these responsibilities will help you clearly focus on the creative aspect of the film.

  • Camera Equipment

Hire a director of photography (DP) and discuss the kind of camera equipment/lighting you want to use. This will be based on what you want the “feel” of the movie to be. Use hand-held cameras if there is a lot of action or if you want a realistic look. You will need a camera dolly or “fig rig” for a “classic” movie look with long sweeping shots. Based on your budget, consider if you want to use film or digital cameras. Film cameras are more expensive to rent but it will give you high quality resolution. Digital cameras will vary in quality depending in the camera and lighting. A Red One digital camera is considered of the top digital cameras on the market and will give you an extremely high-resolution shot (4096 X 2304).

  • Work With Your Actors

Work with your actors prior to shooting. Discuss your vision for the film with them and listen to their ideas for the characters. Rehearse the scenes with your actors to help flesh out the relationships in the story. Directing requires a great deal of collaboration with the actors. Help marry your ideas together to create lovable characters and authentic relationships that will help drive the story.
