Two to three inches of mulch on top of the root ball to keep moisture in, weeds out, and incorporate organic material into the soil. Keep mulch at least two inches away from the base of the trunk to reduce fungal growth and wood rot. As the tree matures, leave leaf litter in place to act as natural mulch.
