It is important to estimate your house painting costs in order to properly budget your home renovation. Here are some tips on estimating your house painting costs:

  • Measure

Measure the length and width of the areas of your house you want to paint. Multiple the length and width to get the square footage of each area of the house you want to paint. Add all the square footage of each area to get the total surface area you need to paint for your house. Note: Get someone to help you with the tape measure when you measuring larger areas like the exterior of your house.

  • Paint Costs

The paint cans usually indicate the amount of square footage each can will cover. Divide the total square footage of your painting area by the amount of square footage the paint can indicates and you will get the number of paint cans you need for the first coat. Multiply that number by three (three coats) and you will have the total number of paint cans you need for the whole job. Since the third coat isn’t is thick as the first and second, it should give you a little left over for touch up or paint-matching later on. Note: Follow the same steps also for calculating the amount of primer you need.

  • Materials

Take in account the amount of materials you need for the job. This includes paintbrushes, paint rollers, roller covers, paint roller extension, drop cloth etc. Write up a list and check out a home improvement store website to estimate the cost of your materials (homedepot.com, lowes.com, acehardware.com e.g.).

  • Cut Costs

Save money on materials by properly cleaning them when you are done for the day. Paint will dry on the materials in a matter of hours. Your paintbrushes and paint rollers/covers will be ruined if you don’t clean them off before the paint dries. Hose off your materials if you are using acrylic paint or clean them off with mineral spirits if you are using oil-based paint. You can also use an old bed sheet for a drop cloth to save money. Store-brand painting materials are also cheaper than name brand products and will usually serve your painting job just as good.
