Winter through early summer. Choose a one-year-old branch along the trunk to notch. Use a coarse 3/8-inch rat-tail file. Stroke around half the diameter of the branch about a 1/8-inch below a dormant bud. Go deep enough to see the white of the wood through the green underbark.
