You’re thinking “I can’t wait until I’m sitting at the ship’s pool”, or visiting an exciting foreign port, or meeting new and interesting people. Going on a cruise can be one of the most delightful forms of travel and a treat as a vacation. Before you step onto the ship be sure to plan well so that you can truly enjoy yourself.

What can I afford?
Cruise ships come in a variety of sizes, amenities, and price ranges. The minimum average per week is approximately $500. Traveling in the off-season can save you money, but what is “off” in one region of the world may be high season in another. Cruises are usually a little cheaper in the spring or fall, due to supply and demand. Kids are in school, and weather can sometimes be uncertain. Fall is hurricane season, which means lower prices, although ships will alter their course to avoid the storms. Alaskan and Northern Europe cruises have short seasons, which tend to push the prices up. Summer is high season in the Mediterranean.
Staterooms also come in a variety of sizes and price ranges. Balcony cabins will cost more than one without, and an interior cabin will cost the least. Some travelers will elect to book the cheapest cabin available so that their vacation funds can be put towards special shore activities. If you like to have your own private oasis, then a balcony cabin is ideal.
Where do I want to go?
For trips of a week or less, you are somewhat limited to the Caribbean or coastal re-positioning. These can be great fun if you just want to get away for a few days. To have more options, allow at least one week for your trip, which opens up destinations such as Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, and the South Pacific. With ten days you have your choice of all seven continents!
Shore excursions are available at each port-of-call. Your options may include tours to historic or scenic sites, participating in the local culture, or enjoying a variety of sports activities. Just be aware that as you include guided tours the cost of your vacation will go up. To help you know what is available at each port, briefings are given by the activities director the day before you arrive. Plan your shore activities to match your greatest interest.
Travel Essentials
In addition to packing your clothing and personal items, these items are essential for your trip:
- Airline tickets or e-ticket confirmation
- Documents that the cruise company sends prior to departure
- Two forms of Identification: passports, visas, or proof of citizenship, drivers license. If you rent a car while ashore, include your auto insurance card.
- Vaccination certificate (if required)
- Medical insurance cards, list of allergies and all medicines you are taking
- ATM and/or credit card, cash or traveler's checks
The cruise ship will offer suggestions on appropriate wardrobe, as will many travel-related websites. Keep in mind that if you forget to pack something you will probably be able to find it on the ship or at one of the ports-of-call!
