Check the foliage closely on houseplants before buying

They should be full and bushy, few or no brown-edged leaves, leaves with spots or holes, and no signs of having been trimmed on new growth. The foliage should not have big gaps between the new leaves. That is a good sign it has been in a crowded space too long, or hasn't had enough light and is stretching.
