Peonies like a neutral to slightly acidic soil (6.5 to 7.0) so….

If you have alkaline soil, instead of working in regular compost, work in an azalea or rhododendron soil mixture that is already acidic. Work that in very deeply and well, so that as the plant's roots grow, they will be in a nice acidic environment.
