Landscape fabrics have replaced black plastic. While black plastic gave good weed suppression, the soil, starved for oxygen and light, became sour and caused root die-back. Landscape fabric is better because it lets air and moisture through. Neither add or allow nutrients into the soil to improve soil structure or health. Landscape fabric doesn’t prevent all weed growth.
