Bark breaks down slowly, doesn't need replenishing annually. The large size allows water to run off into the soil. Soil can be enriched by placing a layer of animal manure or compost before covering with bark chips. Good for mature plants. Not good for young plants or perennial beds. Apply 2-4 inches deep.
