Avoid mulching too close to stems or trunks

Always leave 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) of breathing room around the stems or bases of plants and trees. Any light color on buried trunks is an indication the wood is starting to soften and rot. Pull the mulch away from the trunk and it should recover.
