You can have just as much fun (or more!) decorating for an adult birthday party as for a children's birthday party.
Choose a theme. Backyard barbecue? Classic movies theme? Cowboy supper? Wine and cheese? Hawaii and beach theme? After settling on a theme, choose the rest of the decorations according to it.
Banners. Hang a birthday banner in the party room, or in the backyard if you're outdoors.
Balloons. What's a birthday party without balloons? You can write the birthday guy or gal's name on some balloons, and write best wishes and pieces of birthday trivia on others.
Streamers and confetti. The streamers can be strung out between the balloons; you can also have bowls of confetti at strategic corners so that a handful can be tossed at the right moment.
Centerpiece. Have a centerpiece on the table that either echos the party theme or specially celebrates the birthday person: a "Happy Birthday" cutout, a bouquet of flowers or balloons, a cutout of the birthday age, a basket of goodies, etc.
Dishes and menu. Choose dishes, silverware, napkins, and a menu that contributes to the birthday theme: beer and hot dogs for a sports party, steak burgers and beans for a cowboy theme, popcorn and Cracker Jacks for a movie theme, etc.
Hats and other accessories. Make sure the guests are decorated as well! You can have cowboy hats, '30s gangster fedoras, flower leis, sombreros, turbans, sports caps, berets, or regular party hats on hand to dress up the guests as they arrive.
