Moving to a new location is a major event in most people’s lives. Moving can be stressful and frustrating. Being emotionally prepared, combined with a good plan, can help you make moving easier.
Here are a few tips on what to do when moving:
- Notify post office. If notified, the post office will forward your mail from the old to the new address free of charge for a year. One year should be enough for you to update your address with everyone on your mailing list.
- Cancel your old services. Remember to call your utility company, your phone company, and any company that serviced you. It is your responsibility to cancel any previous services. In many cases you can have the same companies service you at your new location, assuming they cover that location. If you can’t transfer the services, you’ll need to call new companies that service your new location.
- Update your new address with the state. Although the laws vary from state to state, usually you are required to update your ID or the driver’s license within 10 days after moving. Also remember to update your vehicle’s registration and insurance.
- Consider hiring a moving company. Most of the time moving can be overwhelming. Professional moving companies can make the process easier. Usually they pack everything room by room, mark the boxes, transport them to your new location and unload the boxes to indicated rooms. It will be your responsibility to unpack. When hiring a moving company, make sure you go with a reputable company. There are numerous reports of fraud and stealing performed by people claiming to be moving companies.
