Bug sprays often contain DEET (diethyltoluamide), which can cause such side effects as slurred speech, headaches and convulsions when absorbed through the skin of individuals with an inherited metabolic abnormality. There is no way to identify those who might react. Since children absorb substances on skin particularly easily, use repellent sparingly, applying most of it to your child’s clothing.
