Planning fun and entertaining games will give your child a birthday party he or she will always remember. Here are some birthday party games that are easy to plan and relatively inexpensive:
Telephone is a great indoor game that doesn’t require buying any materials. Get the kids to form a circle. Give a simple statement to one of the kids like “the tomatoes are growing quite nicely” for example. Have the kids pass the message around the circle by whispering it in each other’s ears. When the message gets to the last kid in the circle, have him or her say the statement out loud. Now tell everyone the original message. Everybody will be cracking up when they hear how much the message changed from by passing through several kids!
Balloon games are great for indoor or outdoor activities and are fairly inexpensive to plan. One fun balloon game to play is balloon target. Have the kids blow up a balloon and pinch the end to keep it from deflating. Set up a target at the end of the room and have the kids let go of their balloon towards the target. Whoever gets the closest to the target wins. Another great balloon game to play is a balloon scavenger hunt. Write down numbers on small pieces of paper that each corresponds to a prize. Stuff each number into its own balloon. Inflate the balloons and hide them through your home or in the back yard. Have the children go on a scavenger hunt to find the balloons and retrieve the number inside (the kids will enjoy popping the balloons). Hand out the prizes that correspond to the numbers retrieved by the kids.
Buy a piñata and fill it with the candy requested by the birthday boy/girl. Tie the piñata to a tree in your back yard or an area with plenty of clearing (away from windows or light fixtures). Hang the piñata low enough for the shortest child to reach. Have the kids hit the piñata with an old broomstick. Make sure that the other children are far enough away from the “beater” and keep a close eye to ensure the blindfolded child isn’t swinging too far away from the piñata (and not too close to the other kids).
Two great outdoor games to play are the Egg Run Race and the Hula-Hoop Race. For the Egg Run Race, have the children race from one end of the yard to another while balancing an egg on a tablespoon. Playing with hard-boiled eggs will minimize the clean up after the game. For the Hula-Hoop Race, have the children race while keeping their hula-hoop from touching the ground. This race takes a bit longer and it is a good idea to make it a shorter distance than the Egg Run Race.
