After the winter of 2009-2010, most people in the United States had plenty of practice with driving in the snow. It is advised that you do not drive in heavy snowfall, however, if you must, here are a few tips for safe driving:
- First and foremost, drive slow and with caution. Whatever safe practices you follow, always drive with extra caution.
- Decrease your speed and give yourself extra room to stop. Allow three to four more space than usual when braking.
- Brake gently to avoid skidding. If you wheels lock up, release the brake.
- Keep your headlights on & windshield wipers on
- Use low gears to keep traction
- Avoid cruise control at all costs
- Use extra caution when crossing bridges and going over overpasses. These roads tend to freeze first.
- Do not pass snow plows. Keep a good distance behind the truck - and remember the road is going to be better behind them than in front of them.
- If you do not feel safe driving, just stop. Do not risk it - it is not worth a car accident, and injury or your life to just drive around in the snow.
- If you get stuck, do not spin your wheels - it will just make things worse.
- Turn your wheels from side to side to push the snow out of the way.
- Lightly tap your gas pedal to move your car.
- Shovel away snow from the wheels and the underside of the car.
Try sand, cat litter, gravel or salt to help your wheels gain traction over the snow. | | Car in Snow |
