Singing voice lessons

The voice is a complex instrument, and few things are more pleasant to the ear than a lovely singing voice. If you’re a decent singer and want to get better, you may want to consider taking singing lessons.

“As long as we live, there is never enough singing.”  ~Martin Luther

“I don't sing because I'm happy; I'm happy because I sing.”  ~William James

Who should take singing lessons?

Many top singing stars never took a voice lesson, but others swear by them. I think it’s true that exceptional singers are born with the talent and may never need a lesson; I also believe that lessons can make a positive difference for some.

Some marketers of singing lessons boast that anyone can learn to sing. I don’t buy that. A number of folks, bless their hearts, are so tone-deaf that I doubt that any amount of instruction can help.

But those with basic singing talent can learn a lot from reputable singing pros.

What do singing lessons teach?

You’ll learn the following: breathing technique, expanding vocal range, singing with the diaphragm, vibrato techniques, smoothing or eliminating voice "break", diction, vocal warm-ups and cool-downs, and more.

Lessons consist partially of singing certain syllables either on one note, up and down the scale, in arpeggios, or pizzicato style. This apparently has been proven to improve breathing, diction, voice control, pitch and other elements of singing.

You’ll also learn what foods and beverages to avoid before performing, recommendations for products to improve the voice (lozenges, etc.), how to maintain a healthy singing lifestyle and what tools can help while you practice.

I think one of the best qualities to be gained from having a vocal coach is critical feedback and personal advice. It’s always good to have a mentor that you trust.

Where do you learn?

  • The internet is rife with singing lesson web sites, tutorials, advice, tips and instructional videos. Many sites offer DVDs and CDs.
  • Some colleges offer singing classes.
  • It’s my opinion that, if one is serious about learning to sing, it’s best to find a vocal teacher in your area in whom you can place confidence. One-on-one training from a qualified coach is always the best route. Yes, it will cost money but it can pay off in the long run.

A final word

I've been singing in public for years, and I never did a vocal "warm-up" or "cool-down" in my life. I took singing lessons from a talented area instructor for a while, and truthfully I found the exercises to be somewhat pointless.

At the same time, the excellent lady lead singer in our band took lessons for years and was absolutely sold on them.

Singing lessons require a certain mind-set. They're not for everyone, but they're obviously very helpful for many.
