Everyone should be concerned about energy conservation. Besides helping the environment, conserving energy is one of the ways to save money.
Here are a few energy conservation ideas:
- Use energy saving light bulbs instead of regular light bulbs. Energy saving light bulbs are a great way to save money. On average, an energy saving light bulb works from about 6,000 to 15,000 hours, whereas a regular light bulb operates for only around 3,500 hours. Although the initial cost of energy saving light bulbs is higher, overtime you will save money on the light bulbs’ replacement and energy usage.
- Use outside solar lights. Almost everyone who has a walkway or a backyard use outside electrical lights. In some cases, outside electrical lights can consume the same amount of energy as inside lights. To stop using ground electricity and start saving money and energy, you should use outside solar lights. Outside solar lights are efficient and reliable. They also come in different shapes and colors.
- Turn off lights when leaving the room. Turn off the lights when leaving the room should become a habit. It is an old myth that constantly turning lights on and off uses more energy than leaving the lights on for a long period of time. MythBusters, in one of their episodes, proved that it is not the case. Over the life of a light bulb, turning the lights on and off will save you more money than leaving lights constantly on, even when taking the cost of replacing the light bulb into consideration.
- Unplug all unused electrical devices. Another good habit to have is to unplug all electrical devices that are not in current use. Many people don’t realize that keeping some electrical devices such as cell phone charges plugged in still consumes electricity.
- Replace single panel windows with double panel windows. Having bad windows installed in your home can double up your heating bill, especially during winter. To save money, you should install double panel windows because single panel windows don’t keep the heat in the house very well.
- Use stoves instead of fire places. To save money on heating bills during the winter, you should consider using stoves instead of fire places. It is known that fire places lose heat through their ventilation pipes. Stoves keep all warm air inside the house.
- Keep all the drafting areas sealed. Another way to conserve energy is to eliminate all drafting areas. Drafts allow cold air to enter the house forcing heaters to work more than they need to, wasting energy and money.
