Texting While Driving Laws

Increasingly, more accidents are occuring due to inexperienced drivers using their cell phones while driving. Even more so, accidents that occur because of "texting" are on the rise. And fast. Many states have enacted laws banning drivers from texing, or doing anything on their phone similar, while driving. 
Currently, there are no national laws on the books banning texting while driving. However, you can find a ban on federal employees from texting and driving while on federal business or while driving a federally owned car. The National Highway Traffice Safety Association has set guidelines for individual states for banning texting while driving.
As of April 2010, the following states have banned texting while driving:
- Alaska
- Arkansas
- California
- Colorado
- Conneciticut
- Illinois
- Louisiana
- Maryland
- Minnesota
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New York
- North Carolina
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- Tennessee
- Utah
- Virginia
- Washington
- Washington, D.C.
The following states have set bans on texting while driving for inexperienced drivers, such as those with leaners permits, new licensees, and under the age of 18:
- Deleware
- Indiana
- Kansas
- Maine
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- Texas
- West Virginia
