Take an empty jar and cut a fairly wide slit in the lid. Whenever you find a stray button, whether in the washing machine, on the floor, etc., pop it into your button jar. Everyone can contribute to the button jar when they spot a wandering button. When mending, you’ll likely find your ‘lost’ button in the button jar.
