Send a song

It’s relatively easy to send music files to friends and family via the internet. There are several ways of doing so; here are some tips on how to proceed.

Methods of sending songs using the internet

E-mail. Using e-mail is a popular way to send songs. However, there is a problem: large music files (such as wav or aiff) usually cannot be sent via e-mail, since providers have limits on file size. Therefore, these files should be compressed to mp3 files in order to e-mail them.

This is a simple procedure that can be done in iTunes or in other file converting programs.

To send a song, simply attach the mp3 file to your recipient’s e-mail. If the song is unusually long, or if you send several at a time, size may still be an issue. Check with your provider to learn the maximum file size allowable.

“Big mail file transfer” websites. With these transfer services, files are uploaded to an online storage space. Your recipient then receives a download link. These sites often require monthly subscriptions or pay-per-use fees. Two examples are SendYourFiles.com and YouSendIt.com.

P2P (peer to peer) file sharing websites. On these sites, you connect to a p2p network that allows you to share files directly with other network participants. The process is free and there are no limitations on file size.

E-mail Clients. These are e-mail management computer programs with the capability to bypass file size limitations set by various providers. Some require payment, but many are free. Among those to check out are Mozilla Thunderbird, Zimbra Collaboration Suite, and Claws Mail.

Sending between computers and cell phones

The ability to send music and ringtones to and from mobile phones depends upon your phone's software. A cell phone update or a device such as a Bluetooth module may be required. Ask your cell phone provider what would work best for you.

You can send music files between computers and phones using e-mail, text messages or free online web sites such as Beam-it-up-scotty.com and Myxer.com.

Also, there are numerous websites from which you can download free ringtones directly to your computer or cell phone. Check out products.verizonwireless.com, mobango.com, nokiasoftware.info, and a host of others.

Send music via e-cards

Another way to send songs is by visiting some of the many e-card (electronic greeting card) sites. Most have their own in-house music from which to choose and many of the cards are quite creative.

Copyright warning

Always bear in mind that you are violating the law if you send or download copyrighted music without permission.
