Asian Travel Tips for the Adventure Seeker

Asia holds gems and opportunities that are beyond anything the typical westerner will experience.

But Asia can be overwhelming, even for the adventure seeker. How can you make the most out of your cultural experience?

Prepare to be out of your element.

While some Asian destinations are set up for western tourists, most cities are difficult to navigate. It’s easy to feel frustrated. Plan as best you can. And then? Breathe. Be flexible when things don’t go as planned.

Take advantage of information centers. Most often there will be someone who speaks English or has English maps or brochures to offer.

If the thought of managing transportation, finding lodgings, and eating something your stomach can’t handle is overwhelming, book a tour that caters to western sensibilities.

Interact with the locals

Chances are you won’t be able to converse with the average person on the street in an Asian country. But don’t let the language barrier stop you from communicating.

At the very least? Learn how to say hello and thank you. Learn the polite form of greeting for your destination, such as a short bow. Act it out.  Smile.

Be vulnerable. Your attempts might be laughed at, but they’ll always be appreciated.

Be aware of tourist scams

Don’t fall prey to scams. Scams are not typical of only Asia, but you present an attractive target without knowing the language or customs.

Scams can range from taxi scams and unwanted companions seeking commission to more serious offenses.

Educate yourself. Buy a guidebook and make a game plan to deal with scam attempts.

Often common sense is key. If the situation seems too good to be true or you feel uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to be firm and walk away.

Go extreme

Go home with a good story.

This is an opportunity to try something out of the ordinary. Eat dog in China. Pet a tiger in Thailand. Ride a Mongolian horse.  Be open for an experience you won’t forget, and an opportunity you won’t have anywhere else.
