Helping to feed the poor and homeless in your city will give the fulfillment of knowing that you can bring relief to the lives of the less fortunate. Here are some ways for feeding the poor and homeless in your city:
Look up local food pantries and food banks in your area where you can donate non-perishable food. Stock up on non-perishables the next time you go to the grocery store to make an ample donation. Also look out for canned food drives at grocery stores, church, community centers, and schools that are collecting food for a specific food bank in the area. Consider starting your own food drive at your work or organizations/clubs you are a part of.
Find soup kitchens in your area and donate your time to serve meals. Bring your kids or younger relatives to show them the enriching experience of giving back to the community. Donate time to serve Thanksgiving meals to the homeless. Search for religious and non-profit organizations that serve meals in your area (Food On Foot of Los Angeles e.g.).
A home-cooked meal can go a long way for someone who needs it. Cook a hearty meal, store it in Tupperware containers, and hand it out homeless people at a community park. Sandwiches are easy to make and to hand out if cooking isn’t your forte. Keep some granola or protein bars in your car that you can hand out when you are on the road. Order some extra food the next time you go out to eat to give away or offer your leftover doggie bag to someone who is begging. You would be surprised at how much good food gets thrown away that can go to those people need it.
Note: To avoid a potentially dangerous situation, always bring people with you when handing out food to the homeless and don’t hand out food in any parks or public facilities at night.
Coffee shops and restaurants often throw away a great deal of food that is still good to make room for fresher products. Go to the coffee shops and restaurants in your area to collect unwanted food that you can donate to a homeless shelter. Check with the supervisor to see what the actual life is on the product so you don’t endanger the people you are trying to help. Pastries and breads usually make better donations than dairy food (cheeses, milk, yogurt etc.).
