Learning how to create a basic site map of your house will be very useful when plan to remodel or set up a large event in your house. Here are some tips on how to make a map of your house:
Survey the exterior of your house and take rough measurements of the dimensions. Include all exterior features like the patio, garage, and front/back porch. Sketch the exterior of the house on graph paper from a bird’s-eye perspective. Use pencil so you can correct mistakes. Draw the dimensions to scale (1 inch for every 4 feet). Keep in mind that you will need to make an exterior sketch for each floor depending on how many floors you have.
Survey each room and measure the dimensions. Go back to the map and divide the rooms throughout the floor according to their dimensions. Don’t worry if there is some discrepancy in the measurements. You are drawing a basic house map and your goal should be to represent the basic layout of the house the best you can.
Mark the structural and non-structural details of each room, bathroom, and the kitchen. This includes the door entries, windows, built-in cabinets, closets electrical/cable outlets, fireplace, bathtub/shower, sink, appliances etc. Mark the windows using a double line. For the doors, draw a line at a 45 degree angle to the wall and connect the to ends in a half-circle (to show the direction of the door swing). Being more detailed with the rooms will give you more information when planning a remodel.
Mark other structural details of the interior such as the hallways, staircase, loft, interior patio, etc. Sketch other details like the location of the water heater, furnace, A/C unit, and plumbing fixtures. Make basic sketches for larger appliances like the washer/dryer and refrigerator. You don’t have to sketch every detail of your interior, but it is important to include the key elements in your house in case of a house renovation.
