Studying as an international student in the United States is an experience of a lifetime. However anyone who holds an F1 student visa knows that maneuvering around the loops and roadblocks of American visas can be very frustrating and scary as you do not want to jeopardize your studies by simply not understanding how your visa works. Here are a few tips I picked up from my F1 student visa holding friends.
If your F1 student visa expires…
If you are on American soil and your F1 student visa expires you are still considered to be in legal status as long as you are still a full time student. If you have completed your studies and your F1 student visa expires while you are in the US, you have an additional 60 days before you must leave the country or transfer to another school.
If your passport expires but your F1 student visa is valid…
Do not throw away your expired passport, and do not remove the valid F1 student visa page from the expired passport. Use the expired passport with the valid visa along with a new valid passport to enter and travel within the US.
In order to renew your F1 student visa…
You must include all of the documents originally required for your student visa form along with a new I-20 from a new school stating that you have been accepted as an international student. If you are attending the same school you must have your current I-20 endorsed on the back by a school official within the past 12 months.
