Toenail fungus is not an infection you want to let get out of hand. It can cause your toenails to disfigure, turn yellow and black and eventually fall off. This is not something you want to share with others. My boyfriend contracted toenail fungus and we researched for hours until we found the best treatment. The right fungal toenail treatment to use is tea tree oil. Follow these tips to use tea tree oil successfully:
Cut and File
Use a metal nail clipper and nail file to keep your toenails as in control as possible. Cut off as much of the infected toenail as possible without damaging your nail further or causing your toe to bleed. File your toenails down so that the tea tree oil can be properly absorbed in your nail bed. Filing your toenails down also eliminates much of the fungus growth, improves the overall look of your toenails and decreases any pain that would be associated with the disfigurement.
Remember to disinfect the nail clippers and nail file after using them on infected toenails. Soak them in rubbing alcohol for at least 10 minutes.
Wash and Rinse
Wash your feet with antibacterial soap and warm water before administering tea tree oil. It is important to regularly wash your feet, since toenail fungus grows in dirty, dark and damp spaces. Regularly cleaning and drying your feet reduces the chance that fungi will have a chance to grow and spread.
Apply Essential Tea Tree Oil
Use a Q-tip or cotton swab and rub tea tree oil onto the infect nails, on their cuticles and around the toes until the area is moist. Let the oil absorb before you put on socks or shoes. Make sure the last treatment of the day is right before bedtime. You can purchase tea tree oil over the counter at your local pharmacy or drug store. I have found that applying tea tree oil 2 to 3 times a day is the most effective over the counter fungal toenail treatment.
