Jamaica is one of the most popular tourist places in the world. About 1 million people visit Jamaica every year. Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean Sea. The island is located south of Cuba and west of Haiti. The official languages are English and Patois. The population as of 2009 is about 2.8 million people. The capitol is Kingston.
Here are a few facts you should know before travelling to Jamaica:
- Visa requirements. For the US Citizens and permanent residents, no visa is required to enter Jamaica. All visitors have to have a valid passport in order to leave and enter the US.
- Living necessities. Even though the US dollar can be used in Jamaica, all travelers should have Jamaican currency, which is Jamaican dollar. Tourists are known to be charged too much for almost anything. Try to learn the local prices and avoid shopping at obvious tourist places. When brining your own electrical devices, you should know that Jamaica uses 110-120 Volts-- the same as the United States and Canada. You don’t need an adapter for your electrical gadgets.
- Climate. Jamaica is situated in tropical climate of the Caribbean Sea. The temperature ranges from 40 F in the mountain areas to 90 F on the coasts. The rainy season in Jamaica starts during the fall and continues till spring.
- Food. Jamaica offers variety of excellent and delicious food. Many people say that Jamaican cuisine is healthy due to its wonderful combination of fish, meat, herbs, and vegetables. Because Jamaica is influenced by many cultures such as British, Indians, Chinese, Spanish, and British, it adapted many cooking techniques. The most popular ingredients are coconut, breadfruit, allspice, ginger, green banana, and herb spices.
- Sightseeing. Jamaica offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It is known for its sandy beaches, crystal clear ocean shores, and variety of waterfalls. There are several attraction places every visitor should see: glistening water luminous lagoon in Falmouth, island village in Ocho Rios, and Harbour Street in Montego Bay. Also, you can experience scuba diving, deep sea fishing, and shore horseback riding.
